Symposium announcement: A European perspective on the status and future of personalized musculoskeletal modeling.
Monday 14 October 2013 - 9:30-10:30 @ CORS 2013 VENICE - San Servolo, Venice, Italy:

The economic environment demands a more effective healthcare system for the aging population. Diseases to the musculoskeletal system such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and cancer have a large socio-economical impact. Computer techniques can assist in analyzing these diseases and to defi ne what the most effective treatment strategies are. In this workshop three projects will be presented and discussed: The Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) project, the XML project and the TLEMsafe project.

The VPH project is a large initiative assuming that pathologies occur at many different scales in the body. Hence a framework can be defi ned that connects the different scales and thereby, using multi-scale models, enables simulations of pathologies in an integrated manner.

A very different approach is taken in the MXL project, whereby as much information is collected from clinical X-rays. By implementing refined image reconstruction, biomechanical modeling and analysis tools, MXL will make the dynamic joint loading and stability accessible for the planning of joint surgery in a personalized manner.

In TLEMsafe personalized MRI-based musculoskeletal models are generated of patients who need to undergo severe surgery. The objective is to predict the functional capacity of the patient after surgery and with that to optimize the treatment options for this type of patient.

Organizer: N. Verdonschot, TLEMsafe Project Coordinator, University of Twente, The Netherlands.

Speakers: M. Viceconti (VPH), M. Heller (MXL), N. Verdonschot (TLEMsafe)

Live Webcast announcement - 5th March 2013 - TLEMsafe: An integrated system to improve predictability of functional recovery of patients requiring musculoskeletal surgery

Started in 2010, TLEMsafe aims to create a patient-specific surgical navigation system, based on innovative ICT tools, for training, pre-operative planning and execution of complex musculo-skeletal surgery. The project utilizes and further develops the Twente Lower Extremity Model (TLEM), a recently developed musculo-skeletal computer model, to represent the patient-specific situation. The next step is to allow the surgeon to virtually operate on the patient-specific model, after which the model can predict the functional effect of this intervention. In this way, the surgeon can test various surgical scenarios before actually operating. Once the optimal surgical plan is selected, the plan is fed into a computer assisted navigation system that allows the surgeon to reproduce the selected surgical plan for his patient during the actual surgery.

Speaker: Prof. dr. Nico Verdonschot, TLEMsafe Project Coordinator, University of Twente, The Netherlands.
